Welcome to Kin & Flo Farm

We are a Black-owned agricultural training and education center located on ancestral land in the "Florence Community" of Jamestown/High Point, North Carolina. Building on a 200-year legacy of farming and land stewardship, our operation integrates restorative agricultural practices with community education, cooperative development, and food sovereignty initiatives.

We primarily serve communities across the Piedmont looking to access ethnobotanical or culturally relevant foods, herbs, and cultural practices; rooted in the traditional Afro and Indigenous agricultural knowledge that has informed and shaped many contemporary permaculture principles and "regenerative" / sustainable farming methods. As well as new and beginning BIPOC farmers, seeking agricultural workforce development, networking, and collaboration opportunities.

This holistic approach allows us to remediate the soil and support vastly diverse ecosystems - while providing and protecting meaningful fresh and healthy foods, and ancestral practices for the many various communities that call the Piedmont home.

* Our Story *

Kin & Flo Farm sits on ancestral land in the "Florence Community" of Jamestown/High Point, North Carolina — land that has been held by the Cole-Raper-Ingram families across three generations. As members of the community for hundreds of years, our ancestors didn't just farm here; they helped build and maintain Florence Elementary School and Turner's Chapel AME Church, weaving themselves into the foundation of this community.

In 2022, founder Nia Kiara Cole transitioned from a career in film and public health to farming full-time, learning from Black and Brown farmers across the DMV, NC, GA, AL, and MS; in preparation and anticipation of returning to the family "homeplace" in High Point, which was finally realized at the end of 2024 — beginning the reclamation this fallow homestead and the work of soil restoration, community building, and agricultural education. In April 2025, Kin & Flo Farm officially launched and broke ground for the first time in nearly two decades; transforming this land into an essential hub for Afro and Indigenous ecological practices, farmer training, and cooperative food systems.

With foundational support from family and friends, Persimmons Collective Fund, Thrive 2.0, Growing High Point, The Women of Color Farmers Network, The Triad Black Faith Leaders & Black Farmers Network, Village Farmer Fund, RAFI-Southeast, A&T University, Guilford County FSA and NRCS, The Congdon Family Foundation, and the "greater" Florence Community; we are now in our first full production season, growing unique culturally relevant and heirloom crops, training beginning Black farmers, supporting BIPOC coop and coalition ecosystems, and partnering with community institutions (Florence Elementary and Turner's Chapel) and organizations (GHP and TBFL-BFN)  to redistribute produce to communities most in need; as we work to support our mission of equitable food access, rooted in ancestral and agroecological practices, that rebuild and reclaim natural food systems and cultural lifeways for Black and Brown communities throughout North Carolina. This is not just farming. This is land sovereignty in practice.

* Frequently Asked Questions *

What sustainability practices do we use on the farm?

Kin & Flo Farm is rooted in Afro and Indigenous restorative land practices — the traditional agricultural knowledge that actually informed many of what are now called "regenerative" and "permaculture" methods. Our approach includes:

  • Soil restoration through selective clearing cover cropping, crop rotation, composting, no/low-till and other remediation tactics of previously fallow land
  • Integrated plant systems featuring market gardens, orchards, silvopasture areas, and native plants
  • Water management/conservation using swales and berms, inspired by "half moons", designed to retain and direct water naturally across the land
  • Integrated animal systems including goats, sheep, and poultry that contribute to soil health and ecosystem balance
  • Ethnobotanical cultivation — growing culturally specific heirloom varieties of Southern, African, Caribbean, Latin, Indigenous, and Southeast Asian crops that support biodiversity and community food traditions
  • Native bee and pollinator support through honey bee hives and native plantings
  • Covered growing for year-round growing and seedling propagation, reducing waste and extending seasons

Everything we do is guided by the principle that healthy land and healthy communities are inseparable — and that the wisdom to sustain both has always lived within Black and Indigenous agricultural traditions.
